The design of the Heidelberg Ion Therapy centre (HIT) is based on the pilot project at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. While many essential system ideas where transferred to HIT, some important differences exist.
For example, at GSI there was a single treatment room which was given full control over the accelerator while patient treatment was in progress. In contrast, the larger number of treatment rooms at HIT required mechanisms to share central resources.
The talk gives an overview of the technical building blocks of the HIT facility, with particular emphasis on the interplay between accelerator, safety systems and therapy control system and points out differences between HIT and the GSI pilot project.
