Background: Instruments supporting the development and assessment of guidelines, such as GRADE and AGREE, are well established. Yet sound methods in the development of a guideline are no guarantee that a recommendation is (still) valid. Usually the assessment of the internal validity of a recommendation would require a time-consuming systematic review. With the aim of shortening this process the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) is developing methods for the evaluation of the internal validity of recommendations.
Objectives: Discussion of the value and pertinence of internal validity assessments in view of the developments and history of the content assessment of guidelines. Presentation and discussion of the IQWiG methods.
Target group, suggested audience: People with an interest or experience in the assessment of recommendations.
Description: The workshop has 3 parts:
- 1.
- “State-of-the-art in the assessment of the validity of recommendations”. We give an overview of the current methods and developments in the assessment of the validity of recommendations (A. Ruether);
- 2.
- In “Piloting a tool for the assessment of the internal validity of recommendations.” we will present the results of the pilot project, which used the IQWiG methods for the rapid assessment of recommendations (H. Raatz);
- 3.
- “The future of the assessment of recommendations.” We will give an outlook on future developments, the prerequisites for improving the methodology and discuss the implications with the participants. (J. Kleijnen)
