Development of ion beam irradiated ePTFE as the best wrapping material for the treatment of the unclippable cerebral aneurysms

Objective: Wrapping is frequently used when clipping of aneurysms is thought to be impossible due to the broad neck or to be unsafe for perforating arteries. Furthermore, reinforcement of the aneurysm wall of the dog ear remnant at neck clipping is routinely necessary in aneurysm surgery. However, since wrapping does not eliminate the aneurysm, the risk of rebleeding and regrowth of aneurysms is left after surgeries. In these procedures, various wrapping materials have been used, including muscle fascia, muslin, Gore-Tex, and Silastic sheet. However no completely ideal wrapping material was reported before.
Results: We have developed ion beam irradiated expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) sheets for wrapping that shows firm and inert characteristics with strong cell adhesion. Ion beam irradiation is noticed to produce an improvement of polymer surfaces such as ePTFE.
Conclusions: In this report, we introduced the in-vivo and in-vitro experimental study of the newly developed ion beam irradiated ePTFE as well as clinical experiences for skull base surgeries.
