Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of heavy silicone oil as internal retinal tamponade after vitrectomy for complicated retinal detachment.
Method: Forty-two eyes of 41 patients with a complicated retinal detachment involving the inferior part of the retina requiring internal tamponade with silicone oil were included for this prospective study. Inclusion criteria were retinal detachment secondary to proliferative vitreoretinopathy (stage ≥C2), inferior or posterior tears, or penetrating trauma.
Results: At the end of follow-up, 63% of eyes had a completely reattached retina. Another surgery was necessary in 38 % of cases. BCVA was better than 0.05 (20/400) in 54% of cases at the end of follow-up.
Conclusion: HSO showed a good intraocular tolerance in complicated retinal detachments.
