People with the age of 65 and older are one of the fastest growing population segments among the industrial world. Specific the group of the oldest old face a dramatic increase in life expectancy. In older persons over 80 years the greatest proportion of chronic disease, disability, and required health care services are observed.
Although regular physical activity has been recognized as a positive contribution for health promotion and preserving function in older age, these age groups are mostly sedentary and not taking part in organized physical activities.
Considering this high percentage of inactive older persons, there is an urgent need to focus research on the development and promotion of effective strategies to increase physical activity levels among the aged population throughout Europe. For this reason the European Union has granted a research project called EUNAAPA (European Network for Action on Aging and Physical Activity). The goal of this research project is to identify successful strategies for the promotion of physical activities across Europe, and to provide background material and experts advice for policy makers and health care providers dealing with this issue. In addition the research project will form a platform for synergies among European researchers working in the field of aging, physical activity and health.
